What a birth chart is
A birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the moment of birth: where the Sun, the Moon and the planets stood relative to the place you were born. The circle is divided into twelve houses — areas of life — and every planet falls into some sign and some house. The links between planets are called aspects, and they show which parts of a character work together and which pull in opposite directions.
That is why a chart says more than a zodiac sign. The sign is the position of the Sun alone, shared by everyone born in the same month. The chart adds nine more bodies, their houses and their mutual angles — a configuration unique to one person.
What the calculation needs
The date sets the planets by sign. The time is needed for the houses and the ascendant: the circle of houses turns fully in a day, so two hours changes the structure. The city gives coordinates and a time zone, which decide which degree was rising.
If the exact time is unknown the chart can still be built: the planets by sign will be right, but the houses and the ascendant will stay uncertain. Tick “I do not know the exact time” — the calculation runs for noon and the house reading is skipped.

- We compute with the Swiss Ephemeris — the same data professional astrology software uses. The time zone comes from the actual coordinates of the birth city, historical clock changes included.
- How is this different from a sun-sign horoscope?
- A sun-sign horoscope describes everyone born in the same month. A chart is computed from your date, time and place, and two people with the same sun sign get different houses, a different ascendant and different aspects.
- What do I do with the chart afterwards?
